Over 100,000 people have signed a petition calling for free dental care for cancer patients.

Michele Solak decided to launch the petition after discovering that treatments, such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy, can have a negative impact on oral health. Michele was diagnosed with breast cancer, and during treatment, she noticed a significant change in her teeth and gums. Now, Michele, who is from Flixton in Greater Manchester, is appealing for patients to receive free dental care to combat symptoms and reduce the risk of oral health diseases.

Speaking on ITV News, Michele said that many people are unaware of the potential implications for their dental health, and that a large proportion of those who undergo treatment for cancer aren’t advised about oral side-effects. After going through treatment herself, Michele knows what can happen when you have chemotherapy or radiotherapy, and she is hoping to bring about changes that would mean patients have access to free dental care.

Some of the side-effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, such as nausea and hair loss, are well-known, but for many, changes in the gums and teeth come as a surprise. As well as campaigning for free dental treatment for cancer patients, Michele also wants to raise awareness of other side-effects and encourage medical professionals to discuss them with patients at the start of treatment.

Michele’s petition has already attracted a huge amount of support, with well over 100,000 signatures, and she is hoping she can make a positive difference at a time that is already extremely hard for those dealing with a cancer diagnosis and the effects of treatment.
