ataxia telangiectasia and your oral health

How can ataxia telangiectasia affect your dental treatment?

Ataxia telangiectasia is a disorder which can be described through ataxia or difficulty in controlling your muscles, telangiectasias or lesions in your skin or on your eyes, and the malfunctioning of your immune system. Your immune system will not function properly if you are affected with this disorder because of the abnormalities in two types of white blood cells, your T cells and your B cells. Since your immune system is not functioning properly, you will become more prone to bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

If you have ataxia telangiectasia then your dentist should assure you that they will exert all their efforts in order to minimize the risks of infection. You will be given antibiotics before, during, and after the treatment. You will also be given antifungal medications before, during, and after your treatment as well. This will minimize the risk of infection and minimize the risk of spreading previous infections.
